This is an awesome question and while it definitely ranges from person to person, I want to show how quickly my students have progressed with their lessons at The Coastal Stitcher.
As a teacher I really believe that you should feel like you are actively learning in class and that your lessons are moving you towards becoming an independent sewist at home. My goal is to start my students with the fundamentals and then provide fun opportunities in class to continue to build on those skills. All of this is with the goal that they get confident enough that they no longer need me.
I think the best way to show you how fast this can happen is to brag about a few of the amazing people I have got to teach so far. So check out these amazing makers and the projects they have tackled below.
Aleks

Now known as the Sewing Fairy, Aleks, joined the first lessons I ran as the Coastal Stitcher in January 2025. It was clear from the very first lesson that she was going to love to sew. Every week she would come in with a new project she had tackled at home, as she took the skills we were covering in class and ran with them.
She did two rounds of group lessons with me at the beginning of the year. She was growing with absolute leaps and bounds and quickly added a serger to her sewing kit, returning for a quick private lesson to master the basics of the new machine. And that was it, two rounds of group lessons and one private lesson and then she was off creating on her own.
That summer, as I wandered around one of the artist markets at Transfer Beach, I heard someone call my name and there Aleks was again. Now running her very own booth and selling her creations as the Sewing Fairy. Half a year was all it took from joining in beginners classes to selling her sewing creations. A love for natural fabrics and an amazing creative streak and now she is making and selling awesome kids clothes!
You can check out her facebook page here if you want to see some of her amazing work!
It is ok though if you are not aiming to start your own sewing business just yet, let me show you a few more of my wonderful clients, so you can see what sort of progress happens in our lessons.
Tash

Tash started lessons last summer. Interested in learning to make her own clothes, she came along to a beginner’s class where she completed a beautiful bamboo jersey wrap skirt. Tash was back in September (along with a group of her friends) to learn to make a t-shirt dress. The creativity bug had hit and she has just kept going, ducking in for the odd private lesson here and there to help tackle more and more advanced fabrics and techniques.
Her most recent make, was an entirely self-drafted bikini! She has been sewing for less than a year and isn’t just tackling swim-wear (or bathers and she has taught me), she is drafting her own patterns to get her ideal fit! What an amazing maker!
Carey

Carey started lessons with me in January of this year – signing up for private and group classes at the same time. I should have seen from that first moment that she was going to be motivated to just keep on making.
Her grandkids already love the stuff that she is creating for them! I love that she is always looking for new patterns and I have added more than a few of her finds to my own ‘to make’ pile. In four months she has moved from simple tote bags through a whole range of clothes including sweatshirts, shorts and leggings, creating both in class and at home.
Carey is actually one of the main inspirations for my Open Group Classes. With such enthusiasm, I needed to make a space where clients could keep on creating in a fun group setting as their skills advanced. If you want to join Carey (or any of my other students) in an Open Group Class, check out the latest offerings here.
